Getting Started with the Shot Tracker

Using the New Shot Tracker

We’ve introduced a new and improved Shot Tracker, designed to gradually replace the older Shot by Shot mode. This new version provides a faster, more reliable, and more intuitive experience across devices, although it’s currently at different stages of development on each platform.

Below you’ll find an overview of how Shot Tracker currently works on iOS, Android, and smartwatches.

Important Note Before You Start

At this stage, Shot Tracker on watches and phones doesn’t yet sync together.

This means you’ll need to choose one device for the full round. Either track all shots on your phone or track all shots on your watch. Using both simultaneously may cause incomplete data.

On Apple Watch and Wear OS

The Shot Tracker on smartwatches is still in its first version.

  • Tap Start Tracking when you hit your shot.
  • Walk to your ball.
  • Tap again to save the shot once you reach it.

This version does not yet sync live with the phone app, and some advanced features (like auto lie detection or putt tracking) are still in development.

We’re continuing to improve this experience, with Apple Watch updates expected first, followed by Wear OS.

On Android

The new Shot Tracker is being gradually introduced on Android, building the foundation for the full robust experience coming later this year.

Here’s how it currently works:

  • Hit your shot.
  • Start walking, and the distance will update automatically.
  • When you reach the ball, tap the button to save the shot.
  • Repeat for your next shots.
  • The first shot starts from the tee, but you can adjust its position manually.
  • Each following shot starts from the previous shot’s location.
  • You can move a shot by dragging its marker or tapping it to edit the club and lie.
  • Putts can be added, and the scoring screen will automatically update based on the recorded shots.

On iOS (video below)

The iOS version already includes the complete Shot Tracker experience and has replaced Shot by Shot entirely.

How it works

  • Hit your shot and start walking. The app automatically starts tracking distance.
  • When you reach the ball, tap Save Shot.
  • Near the tee, the option to Set Tee appears automatically, but you can adjust it at any time by dragging the marker.
  • The first shot starts from the tee, and each following shot continues from the previous shot’s position.
  • You can edit or delete a shot by tapping it.
  • To change a shot’s location, drag its marker on the map.
  • Putts can be added, and the scoring screen will automatically update based on the recorded shots.

Additional Features

  • Tap the shot card (showing club and lie) to pause tracking and make edits.
  • Tap the bin icon to delete a shot completely.
  • If your course is mapped with our latest technology (polygon mapping), you’ll also get auto-lie detection.
    • If lies seem inaccurate, the course may not yet have polygon mapping. Feel free to contact us at help@hole19golf.com, and we’ll review it.
  • Shots landing on neighbouring fairways will still register as “fairway” lies, but they won’t count as Fairway Hits in your stats.
  • Auto-Zoom and Auto-Target can be enabled in your round settings.
  • You can move the flag at any time. If you’ve already added putts, they’ll automatically adjust to the new flag position.
  • Penalties: When adding a shot, drag the marker to the location where your ball actually landed (for example, in a water hazard) and save it as a Penalty. After saving, drag the marker to the spot where you took the drop to continue play. This way, you’ll be able to clearly see both where the ball ended up and from where it was dropped.
  • Two-stroke penalties are not yet supported but are under consideration for a future update.

Looking Ahead

The new Shot Tracker is the foundation for several exciting improvements requested by our community.

In the near future, you’ll be able to review aerial imagery and visualise every hole right after saving your round, just one of many features being built on this new system.
