The Dispersion Tool gives you a visual representation of where your shots land over time. By mapping the spread of your shots for each club, you can identify tendencies, correct inconsistencies, and make smarter decisions on the course.
This feature is available on Premium or Intelligence plans.
What is the Dispersion Tool?
Shot dispersion refers to the pattern formed by where your shots end up relative to your target. Every golfer has a natural spread - some shots go long, some short, some left, some right. The Dispersion Tool collects your shot data over multiple rounds and displays it as an overlay on the hole map, giving you a clear picture of how consistent (or inconsistent) you are with each club.
Rather than relying on memory or gut feeling, the Dispersion Tool lets you see the actual data behind your game, helping you understand not just your average carry distance, but the full shape of your shot pattern.
How to access the Dispersion Tool
- Tap Play Golf on the Hole19 home screen.
- Select your course and tap Start Round.
- Open Round Settings and toggle on Shot Dispersion Tool.
Note: The Dispersion Tool requires a sufficient number of recorded shots to generate a meaningful pattern. The more rounds you track with Hole19, the more accurate and insightful your dispersion data becomes.
What you can learn from your dispersion data
Shot shape & tendency: See whether you consistently fade, draw, push, or pull the ball with specific clubs. This helps you play to your natural shot shape instead of fighting it.
Distance spread: Understand not just your average distance, but the full range of how far your shots travel - from your shortest to your longest - for each club in the bag.
Lateral spread: Identify how wide your left-to-right (or right-to-left) spread is. A tight lateral dispersion means you are very consistent; a wide one may indicate a swing issue worth working on.
Miss patterns: Discover your most common miss direction so you can plan smarter on the course - for example, always leaving yourself on the correct side of a hazard or green.
How to use dispersion data on the course
Understanding your dispersion is only half the battle - the real value comes from applying that knowledge during a round. Here are some practical ways to use your dispersion data:
- Club selection: If your 7-iron dispersion shows a consistent short miss, consider taking one more club to account for it.
- Target selection: Aim away from trouble on the side where you most often miss. If you frequently miss right, aim slightly left of centre to keep your misses in play.
- Course management: On tight holes, choose the club with the tightest dispersion to maximise your chances of keeping the ball in the fairway or on the green.
- Practice focus: Use your dispersion data to prioritise what to work on at the driving range, focusing on the clubs or patterns that show the most room for improvement.
Tips for getting the most out of the Dispersion Tool
- Track every round with Hole19 to build a larger, more reliable dataset.
- Record your shots as accurately as possible during a round, including chip shots and partial swings.
- Review your dispersion data regularly and compare it over time to measure improvement.
- Combine dispersion insights with your Strokes Gained data for a complete picture of your performance.
